Surgery of any type is a very big deal. You're having a major procedure done to heal some part of your body that was injured or broken in some way. If you have foot surgery especially, it's a big deal. If you are having foot surgery, you could be out for weeks without being able to walk or move about as you normally would. Foot surgery requires patience on your part in order to heal properly after your surgery. Pushing yourself too far is only going to hinder your ability to heal properly after your surgery. In order to help you heal after your surgery, there are a number of things you should do. Read on for helpful information.
Don't Rush
Again, patience is key after any type of surgical procedure. You can't rush into anything too quickly, or you could end up re-injuring yourself and end up three steps back. You need to be patient and not rush any part of your healing process. This means you need to listen to instructions provided by your podiatrist and follow them. Just because it isn't causing you pain to walk on your foot right after your surgery doesn't mean in the hours afterward that you won't be in pain, have swelling, and notice days later that you've re-injured yourself again. Don't rush the healing process and trust your podiatrist's medical advice.
Know When To Rest
Even with following your podiatrist's medical advice, when you go to your therapy or begin to move about more, if you feel like you need to take a break, do so. Know when you need a rest and when you need to rest your foot. You are the only one that knows what you're feeling, so if you feel too much pain or you feel anything out of the ordinary, you need to know when to rest.
Stretch And Exercise
You're more than likely going to end up having physical therapy, meaning you'll be stretching and exercising your foot. You can do these types of things at home as well, but you need to be sure you are following the same routine as your physical therapist. Don't go off and do your own type of exercises and stretches. Do the ones that were shown to you, as these are the best type for you post-surgery.
If you are going in for foot surgery, you are going to want to bounce back right away, but this isn't going to happen if you don't follow the medical advice of your podiatrist. Talk to your podiatrist about other things you should do after your surgery in order to help you heal properly.
